Ruby Khan's Statement

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

Ruby Khan's work observes both the physical and emotional journey she has undertaken throughout her life. At the age of five, she was diagnosed with a speech-language impairment; affecting her confidence to speak and understand. She was a very lonely child.

Through the ongoing help and provision of a charity called 'contact a family'. She has developed into an independent and confident individual. Her work here observes the diverse culture of London. London is full of culture with bursting colours throughout the city.

Her work presented here explores her journey as an individual, and the memories of confidence-building day trips of London organised by contact a family. She has used acrylic paints, inks, paint brushes, paint bottle tubes and a drawing stick method to create these works.

Her work communicates these memories, her work utilises layering to convey these repeated experiences; and the impact it had on her life where she felt overwhelmed. She has influences coming from both artists Idris Khan and Stephanie Jung.

Her work also communicates the diversity of London as London is a city full of colours and excitement. Throughout the city, she has explored the use of colours inspired by the 80's disco music; she raised with the 80's music throughout her emotional journey.

She has also been, influenced using colour, from David Bowie with Damien Hirst. She is an ambitious individual who likes to take challenges and experiment in depth. She specifically shows her process by experimenting with different ways of installing her work.
